While cultural activities abound year-round in Guam, there is no better time to visit than Mes CHamoru, an annual celebration of culture, history, and heritage throughout March. From delicious food to historic sites to interactive experiences, there’s so many ways to make memories and learn something new with the whole family.

Educate
Guam Museum
Located in Hagåtña, the Guam Museum takes you on a journey through thousands of years of Guam’s history. With artwork and exhibits highlighting the mythic creation of the CHamoru people and pre-colonial life, the Spanish and Japanese occupations of Guam, and the present-day political and cultural concerns of the island, the museum provides a comprehensive overview of the island’s history. This year also marks an exciting change as thousands of artifacts that were previously removed from Guam are being returned from the Bishop Museum in Hawaii after a hundred years. Some of the most notable pieces returning to the collection are latte stones, a powerful symbol of CHamoru culture and a tangible connection to the island’s ancient history and traditions.
The Guam Bus
The Guam Bus produces educational materials to revitalize the CHamoru language. From comic books to children’s books, they have a wide variety of print resources that are engaging and approachable for all ages. Additionally, their social media has a treasure trove of vocabulary resources to help spark your comprehension.
Cultural Dance
If you want the opportunity to experience traditional Chamorro dancing for yourself, you have so many opportunities to watch a performance! From village festivals to the Chamorro Village Night Market to dinner shows, Guam’s youth and experienced dancers are keeping their culture alive through their lively performances. For families interested in enrolling their children in traditional dance classes, cultural dance houses, known as “gumas,” are located throughout the island.

Visiting a farmers’ market or roadside stand is a great way to learn more about local produce and to start cooking your own traditional dishes at home!
