Too Hot to Handle: Guam’s Annual Mangilao Donne’ Festival

If you missed Guam’s Annual Hagat Mango Festival, don’t worry—you have another chance to enjoy a fantastic local event. Join us at the exciting Mangilao Donne’ Festival, where you can experience the unique flavors of donne’, a staple in local dishes like kelaguen and Guam’s famous fina'denne'

So, what exactly is donne’? According to the University of Guam, there are two types of hot pepper plants on Guam. One is “donne’sali,” characterized by its small, bright red, and very pungent fruits. The other is “donne’ ti’au,” a long, red, and equally pungent pepper. “Donne’sali” has traditionally been harvested from the wild, while “donne’ ti’au” is typically grown in backyard gardens.

Whether you like it hot or not, there’s plenty to eat, see, and do at the Mangilao Donne’ Festival. Mark your calendar for Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 15, 2024!

This annual three-day event draws both residents and tourists to the friendly village of Mangilao. At the festival, you can expect vendors selling food, snacks, and drinks, as well as locally made products, gifts, and souvenirs. You might even find vendors selling local pepper plants so you can enjoy hot peppers from your own backyard year-round.

There are also local cooking competitions, such as Best Kadon Pika and Best Dinanche. Craving some barbecue? A Guam festival wouldn’t be complete without it! Stroll around and enjoy live music from talented local artists and bring the kids along for fun games and kiddie rides. This is a family-friendly event you won’t want to miss!
