‘Get into the groove’ walk with your ‘best friends’

Remember the neon-colored leggings, oversized off-shoulder T-shirts, big earrings, lace gloves and the big hair highlighted with gravity-defying bangs?

Relive those days of radically fun fashion at the Zumba to the ‘80s party on April 25, starting at 6 p.m. at the Tamuning Gym.

“Zumba fundraisers are all the rage these days, so we wanted to do something different,” said Faye Varias, event chair and owner of Puppy Love Guam. “Since most Zumba fanatics are from a generation that remembers where they were/how they dressed during the ’80s, we thought it would be a fun little twist to the class, with a prize incentive for dressing up.”

The retro-theme fundraising party is a kickoff event for the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life, a spinoff of Relay for Life.

Bark for Life is an annual national event that celebrates the relationship between the canine caregivers and the cancer survivors. It will be held for the first time on Guam on June 2, with families and their “best friends” walking a one-mile course.

“As a dog lover as well as an individual whose family has been affected by cancer, I stepped up to chair this inaugural event. It’s very intimidating, but it’s all for a good cause so it’s well worth the time and effort,” Varias said.

The event, she added, “presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society.”
Participants are allowed to register no more than two dogs per adult. Registration is $15 for the first dog and $10 for each additional dog.

“Dogs must show proof of current rabies vaccination and license to register,” Varias said. For more information, call (671) 477-9451 or email Faye Varias, at puppyloveguam@gmail.com.
