Italy to Guam

Italian cuisine wouldn’t be as vibrant without its rich history and culture, and at Vitale’s, these traditions find a new home on Guam. Owner, Joe Vitale, moved to Guam from Sicily, Italy to pursue his passion for cooking. As a child, his father briefly introduced him to Guam. At the time, Joe didn’t know that those words would later shape his future.

Joe didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life, and it took him many years to really find what he was passionate about. He migrated to the US mainland for more opportunities and worked as a truck driver for a while. It was a near-death experience from an accident that made Joe realize he wanted to change his life and do something that he was passionate about — cooking. It was the one thing that made him truly happy.

After several years, the island of Guam resurfaced in his life, but this time by a new family member. After careful thought, Joe and his family made the decision to pack their bags and move to Guam. Adjusting to their new life in Guam wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t long before they fell in love with the beauty and people of Guam. “Being by the water reminded me of my home in Italy,” Joe said. The connection to his roots found its way into his cooking, and in 1992, Pizza Queen was born in Harmon, offering a taste of Joe’s Italian heritage. Four years later, in 1996, Vitale’s Italian Restaurant opened in Tumon.
