Guam Art Exhibit IV

During the past couple of years, The Guam Art eXhibit (GAX) has spearheaded the mission to blur, and eventually erase, the lines that divide what is commonly accepted in our community as local art. Often, when we think of traditional art, we think of the many familiar symbols and traditional images that we have grown to know from history books and that have become part of our local identity. GAX aims to help young artists, whose unique and seldom explored ideas about the Guamanian way of life, as well as their personal statements, gain recognition for daring to depart from traditional concepts and explore new and exciting ways to express their local pride.

We encourage the exploration and practice of unconventional forms of expression, and with GAX, through a diverse group of local talents, illustrators, graphic artists, painters, and even tattoo artists, we are given complex, thought-provoking pieces of art that reflect the many different ways people view life on Guam. Each artist’s creation is a piece that contributes to our identity as a community.

In August of 2011, the Guam Art eXhibit III attracted more than 800 visitors throughout its four-day run in support of our local artists and hobbyists, some of whom have never participated in an art show but found a home at GAX and gained instant admiration and praise from the show’s attendees. Following in the success of our last show and heeding the overwhelming requests we’ve received for another, we have begun to put together the next installment.  We are confident that GAX IV will be an even bigger and better show than the last.
