Editor’s Choice: Kai Japanese Restaurant

This hidden gem offers up as much charm and intimacy as it does flavor. A true mom and pop, Kai serves excellent sushi, ramen, and sizzling plates of fish and tofu. We can’t get enough of the pink dragon roll, tuna and onion salad, fried gingko nuts, and spicy tuna roll. Watch Japanese TV with the owners, strike up a conversation, and you may even have your picture snapped and posted on the sushi bar.

Editors’ Choice: Beachin’ Shrimp

Beachin’ Shrimp offers a coast-to-coast shrimp fest. Located in The Plaza Shopping Center next to ABC Store, Beachin’ Shrimp is bright and modern with a selection of American, Spanish, and Mexican coastal dishes. With tables for dining in, it’s a great lunch or dinner option for a quality seafood meal. For quick service, pull up to the bar and enjoy a bright, citrus Mojito or a beer with an avocado-loaded Mexican shrimp cocktail. The rosemary-infused signature soup is a must-try. It comes with french bread for dipping and can be served with rice or pasta. The spicy broth is simmered for a record 10 hours! The shrimp kelaguen is a local favorite and visitors can’t get enough of the California shrimp rolls. The Gambas Al Ajillo offer a taste of Spain and are loaded with garlic, red pepper, and smoked paprika. Dessert is a no-brainer — two scoops of coconut gelato atop locally made tapioca, drizzled with mango sauce.

Editors’ Choice: Rox Cailaoj

Rox Cailaoj, Katrê Bistro owner and chef, was a successful restauranteur in the Philippines for nearly two decades. Having studied at the Clark Culinary School in Washington, Cailaoj was hired as the executive chef of the Sheraton and Renaissance hotels. His seasoned techniques (pun intended) allow for use of only the freshest herbs and vegetables. The field green salad with balsamic vinaigrette, confetti of peppers, kalamata olives, and grapes also had a sprinkling of capers. The bruschetta is a must-have with its fresh tomato salsa piled on top a crunchy crostini with a thin, but punchy layer of pesto. The steamed mahi mahi was a surprise dish only because of its Asian flavors — ginger, garlic, scallion, and heaps of cilantro in a sweet soy broth. Served only with white rice to lap up the aromatic broth, the mahi mahi is definitely a standout. Katrê’s shrimp scampi has already become a local favorite.

Food at Sunset Grill is delicious, filling, and certainly best when washed down with ice cold beers! Try Sunset Grill in Asan Beach for a relaxing change of pace along with creative new tastes. Take the beautiful drive down to Asan, and on the beachside of Marine Corps Drive, find a seat on our open air patio deck. The pulled pork sandwich is always a favorite as well as the beef brisket, which has been slow-smoked for 10 hours after being spiced with our own secret grillin’ rub blend. Readers’ Choice: (Tie) Asu Smokehouse, Proa & Jamaican Grill

Editors’ Choice: ASU Smokehouse

Owners & brothers, Buddy and Sonny Orsini truly have a passion for their art and craft. Since opening in Asu Smokehouse in January 2013, they have created a reputation for delivering unbelievably tender, juicy, and perfectly smoked, mouthwatering meats. The pit is located in Chamorro Village, baseball side of the pavilion, and is manned 24/7 by dedicated Asu employees. Asu is the only barbecue restaurant on the island that uses exclusively local hardwoods, such as tangantangan, in their smoker, using only renewable and sustainable fuel is key to their environmental and social mission. In other words, NO gas, NO charcoal, and NO lighter fluid, NO electricity! All their meats and sides are MSG and gluten-FREE. Asu is also an award-winning barbecue competition team, capturing three first-places last year. The beef brisket (always 100% Certified Angus Beef because they are a licensed CAB restaurant) is smoked for 18-20 hours with only a dry rub, the base of which is made of “locally” harvested sea salt from Inajaran Bay.

Editors’ Choice: Vitale’s Italian Restaurant

Any self-respecting Italian restaurant has to have good pizza. And Vitale’s is no exception. As an unabashed carnivore, I would have to suggest you try their Meat Roma pizza. It is a ridiculously cheesy platter of heaven. And hidden under all that cheese like treasures invaluable is a plethora of meats to satisfy even the most insatiable of desires. With Canadian bacon, sausage, ground beef, pepperoni, and enough cheese to feed a small army, all piled atop a soft crust with crispy edges, you simply cannot ask for much more.

Editors’ Choice: Meskla Dos

The Rancheru Burger is everything you want in a burger. Its drip-down-your-chin juicy and so full of flavor it’ll kick you in the face (a nice, friendly kick in the face as opposed to the other kind). Their house made ranch dressing provides a slight spiciness to awaken your senses and the smokiness from the bacon shifts all the other flavors into overdrive. And while I’m not usually an egg-on-my-burger type of person for this burger I make an exception. The egg helps hold everything together and brings a nice heartiness. Meskla Dos offers friendly service and a great atmosphere. And I’ll tell you, these guys know what they’re doing.
